Everything you ever wanted to know about using Pinterest but were too afraid to ask!

Pinterest (@Pinterest) is an incredible visual discovery tool enabling Pinners around the world find and save things around their interests—whether that’s travel, food, cars, articles, fashion, decor, shopping or DIY.

And it’s is a powerful way for bloggers, publishers and media brands to reach new and existing audiences. The visual nature of Pinterest brings stories to life and great imagery aids in the discovery process.

If you’re not already using Pinterest to promote and drive traffic to your blog, #FBC15 is the perfect time to get up to speed and learn how to make the most of this platform and build your brand.

And if you are already pinning, you’ll know it's a social network like no other. But how can you do more with it?

We are really excited to welcome Lizzie Sibley, Marketing Manager for Pinterest UK to this year’s FBC on a mission to help bloggers maximise the potential offered by this most visual of platforms.

Lizzie, who you’ll find on Pinterest and Twitter as @SquirrelLizzie, will host the ‘Pinterest 101’ workshop, looking at what Pinterest is and how can it help you and your blog.

Did you know that as far as social media is concerned, Pinterest is the largest driver of web traffic (second only to Facebook), referring more than Twitter, Google + and Youtube combined? But it's totally different to every other platform, where it’s quality over quantity in terms of content, where hashtags don't work, and longer text is better than short...

Lizzie’s session will cover the basics, help time-poor users get the most out of the platform and deepen your understanding of what’s possible. There will also be a Q&A at the end.

We caught up with Lizzie Sibley to find out why she’s keen to connect with bloggers at FBC15.

How did you hear about FBC?

We heard about FBC from the bloggers who attend the event within our community. Many foodies who have a Pinterest presence share about FBC both on and off the platform.

We’re so glad to be joining FBC15. Food and drink are important categories on Pinterest and helping our Pinners to discover your amazing foodie content is something we’re really excited about.

What are the main ways people use Pinterest when it comes to food?

We see four major ways that Pinners are engaging with food content: searching for everyday dishes, impressive intertwining recipes, aspirational ideas to take their cooking to the next level and, of course, eye candy (food photography).

We can't wait to connect with bloggers who engage with food on Pinterest in these ways. If you're not on the platform yet or have only just started, join our session and learn to get the most out of Pinterest.

How can bloggers and brands work better together?

If you’re curious about ways bloggers can collaborate with brands on Pinterest, check out our full Acceptable Use Policy for examples of what’s allowed and what’s not.

Do you ever work on projects with bloggers?

This March we have worked with a selection of bloggers and Youtubers who use Pinterest for a breakfast campaign. We looked to the foodie community on the platform to highlight some of their favourite recipes from around the web to celebrate this meal.

Do you have any advice you can share with Pinterest newbies ahead of FBC15?

Here are five tips for content creators who’d like to use Pinterest before the conference if you are not using it already:

  1. Install the official ‘Pin It’ button on your website to make it Pinterest friendly—you’re helping your readers share and distribute your content on your behalf.
  1. Optimise your pinability by pairing your content with beautiful, high-quality, vertically-oriented images.
  1. Write thoughtful Pin descriptions that provide context—we’ve noticed that positive messages resonate well with Pinners.
  1. Get article Rich Pins to highlight your article headline, author and story description, giving readers a preview of what they’re about to read.
  1. Learn what captivates your audience with Pinterest Analytics and refine your editorial strategy.
